Diabetes and fatty liver disease often coexist, with up to 70% of people with type 2 diabetes developing non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). NAFLD occurs when too much fat accumulates in the liver, which can lead to inflammation and scarring. People with diabetes are at a higher risk for developing NAFLD due to insulin resistance, which causes the body to store excess fat in the liver.
